Amherst Winery

Situated on the northern side of the Great Dividing range, Amherst Winery was established in 1989 by elizabeth and norm Jones. Today, it is owned and operated by their son Luke Jones, who has done a lot to develop Amherst Winery’s distinct winemaking style.

The vineyard is located on old alluvial goldfields, which date back to the 1850s. Over the past 150 years, the gold mining activity has turned over top soil many times, which has created an unforgiving landscape that is perfect for producing grapes with a delicious, concentrated flavour.

With each variety that Amherst Winery produces, a number of techniques are employed, all with the intention of creating elegantly balanced. The wines are all made in small batches, wild yeast fermented and gently basket-pressed, before being matured on French oak.

The Amherst Winery Cellar Door is a must visit for wine and food enthusiasts alike. Located in a corner of the winery, winemaker Luke Jones is happy to personally take you through the extensive selection of wines available.

Tasting Notes

2015 Pinot Noir

The pinot noir grapes for this wine were sourced from a 20-year-old vineyard, just west of Avoca. The wine displays bright raspberry and rhubarb flavours and aromas, as well as earthy, forest floor and mushroom complexity.

2013 Amherst Walter Collings Shiraz

This shiraz was named in honour of Jones’ great grandfather, who once farmed the land. Dense and dark in appearance, the wine has aromas of blueberry, dark cherry and clove. The palate is concentrated and complex with layers of dark fruits, Middle eastern spices, mocha and fine tannins.
