Mount Avoca

A visit to Mount Avoca will take you back to the very origins of the beautiful Pyrenees wine region. After the first vineyards were planted in the 1880s, the Pyrenees ranges were transformed into one of the most exceptional winemaking regions in the country. Mount Avoca was first established in 1970 by John and Arda Barry, which makes it the second oldest vineyard in the entire region.

The Barry’s made it their mission to find the ultimate wine region to create their own vineyard. After many years of travelling across both Victorian and South Australian soil, Mount Avoca was born at the foothills of the beautiful Pyrenees ranges. The winery is now owned and managed by their son and executive winemaker, Matthew Barry. He leads the passionate team to ensure The Barry’s ideals and expectations of quality and purity are present in every single bottle.

Mount Avoca prides itself on its compliance with national production standards, and since 2013, the vineyard has been producing organic grapes that are recognised by Australian Certified Organic. As of 2016, every aspect of the entire winery has also become fully organic.

The combination of old-fashioned values and modern technology is just one of the secrets behind Mount Avoca’s success. Specialising in handcrafted organic wines that will tantalise your tastebuds, the vineyard is best known for its cool-climate shiraz and sauvignon blanc, but has recently turned its focus to Italian and Spanish varietals, including nebbiolo, lagrein, tempranillo and sangiovese.

Visitors will love Mount Avoca’s panoramic cellar door, which boasts magnificent views of the vineyard. If you’re interested in spending the night, one of the three luxurious eco-luxe lodges provides the perfect setting for a romantic getaway. The following morning, take a bike ride through the rolling hills or enjoy a family picnic with the vineyard’s on-site barbecue facilities.

Mount Avoca’s dedication to quality is apparent in its approach to viticulture and respect for the traditions of winemaking, and its level of quality is not often found among other boutique vineyards. The winery was awarded five red stars in the James Halliday Wine Companion, and has won numerous awards for many of its signature wines. All wines are available to purchase online, and Mount Avoca offers its wine club members exclusive special discounts year-round.

Tasting Notes

2016 Estate Chardonnay (Organic)

This chardonnay has intense aromas of fresh peaches, limes, grapefruit, guava and hints of lemongrass. Oak contributes to the creamy vanilla, butterscotch, white pepper and ash notes, which beautifully enhances the complexity of this impressive wine.

2015 Old Vine Shiraz

This wine has wonderful intensity, structure, weight and complexity, which is only achieved when vines have struggled through five decades of floods, droughts, pests and storms. Deep and vibrant red in colour, this shiraz has notes of spiced plum and black cherry, as well as hints of pepper, coffee, and cocoa.

2016 Lagrein (Organic)

Deep burgundy in colour, this lagrein has hints of cherry, ripe plums, figs, dark berries and subtle truffle notes. This wine is well- balanced, medium bodied and full in flavour, due to the ripe fruit flavours that soften the zesty acidity, which is typical of this Alpine variety.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Organic)

Crystal clear in colour with a dash of lime green, this sauvignon blanc is well-balanced, lightly aromatic and has a delightful palate structure. Releasing tropical aromas, such as lychee, passionfruit, feijoa, lime and fresh herbs, this wine goes exceptionally well with seafood and a range of fresh, modern cuisine.
