Delatite Winery

Robert and Vivienne Ritchie planted their vineyard in 1968 on the family property nestled within the foothills of Mt Buller, before establishing Delatite Wines in 1982. Their son David took over the reins in 2007, and with help from winemaker Andy Browning, has continued Delatite Wines’ family tradition of producing great wines.

The Ritchie family’s century-long connection to the property means that they understand the land: with the result that Delatite’s wines are a true reflection of the vineyard’s terroir. The Reserve and Estate wines are all made from bio-dynamically grown grapes from the vineyard and fermented using wild yeasts.

The dedication to quality in both the vineyard and wine is evident in the many awards the winery has received. Delatite Wines has been consistently successful in the show circuit and favourably reviewed in the media.

“This is uncompromising cool climate viticulture and the wines naturally reflect that,” says James Halliday in (The Australian Wine Companion 2014). Delatite Wines has been rated a five red star winery from 2009 to 2014.

Widely recognised for producing delicate white aromatics and elegant reds, Delatite Wines is best known for its rieslings. However, the winery is equally respected for its gewürztraminer, pinot gris and chardonnay. Its best known reds are the Devil’s River – a Bordeaux blend, shiraz, pinot noir and tempranillo. Also available in limited volumes are two beautiful sparkling wines including the Demelza – a rosé made from pinot noir, and the Polly made from gewürztraminer.

Visitors are made very welcome at the cellar door and Larder in Mansfield. Regular members/friends tastings, dinners and events are held both at the cellar door and out at the winery with its spectacular views across the Alps.

winebottleTasting Notes

2008 Delatite ‘Polly’ Sparkling Gewürztraminer
This wonderful methode champenoise sparkling wine is pale in colour and fresh on the nose, showing grapefruit and musk aromas. On the palate it is fresh and zingy with rose water flavours that you would expect from gewürztraminer, as well as some lovely crisp citrus characters. The bead and mousse is fine and persistent and gives the wine a great lift.

2012 Delatite Riesling
Showing lovely delicate floral aromatics that are typical of all Delatite Wines’ rieslings, this wine was fermented with wild yeasts and made from bio-dynamically grown fruit. The palate has layers of lemon rind and lemon blossom with a fine talcy structure and a fresh acid finish. Enjoy now or until 2025. James Halliday – 94 points.

2012 Delatite Pinot Noir
The 2012 Pinot Noir has layers of flavour and complexity. The colour is a deep red with hints of purple and the nose shows alluring black cherry and some plum characters. The palate again shows these sweet fruit characters with layers of spice, mushroom and interesting tar characters from the barrels. The finish is long and intense.

2010 Delatite ‘RJ’ Reserve Shiraz
The 2010 ‘RJ’ Reserve Shiraz is only made in Delatite Wines’ best years. Deeply coloured with aromas of blackberry and peppery spices, the palate is intense with tart cassis, cracked pepper and spicy oak flavours. The tannins are mouth filling and the wine has a long finish of berry and oak characters. This is a wine made for ageing so it can be cellared with confidence for 20 years. James Halliday – 94 points.
