Balgownie Estate

The oldest vineyard in the Bendigo region, Balgownie Estate is situated on a gentle slope overlooking Myers Creek in Maiden Gully, just ten minutes from Bendigo.

The site was selected and first vines planted in 1969 by local pharmacist and now legendary winemaker, Stuart Anderson. Balgownie Estate’s first vines were cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and chardonnay. The cabernet sauvignon was of particular interest as it was not widely known or available in Australia at the time. The vineyard also supports smaller plantings of merlot, cabernet franc and viognier.

Renowned as one of Australia’s great small vineyards, these wines are respected for their consistently high quality and longevity, a trademark that began with Stuart Anderson and continues today. Balgownie Estate is now owned by brothers and passionate wine lovers Des and Rod Forrester along with their long term friend, Bill Freeman.

The Balgownie Estate cellar door is set amongst picturesque gardens and lawns overlooking the beautiful vineyard. In addition to the excellent selection of current vintage wines for tasting, there is a small selection of aged museum wines available. The cellar door and café offer a relaxed indoor and alfresco dining experience with an exciting menu of fresh and tasty dishes.

Balgownie House is a classically restored 80-year-old miner’s cottage, just a short stroll from the cellar door. Tastefully divided into two contemporary self-contained single- bedroom luxury apartments, both offer separate lounge and dining areas, a queen size bed and a spa bath. A sofa bed can be requested for extra guests. Gourmet platters are available and, with your favourite wine, perfectly completes the peaceful Balgownie Estate setting.

2013 Balgownie Estate Centre Block Shiraz
