Seville Estate

Seville Estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Yarra Valley, established in 1972 as part of the resurgence of the region. When Dr Peter McMahon planted the first vines at Seville Estate, it marked the rebirth of the Yarra Valley as a premium wine region. By the end of the decade, Dr McMahon and his wife Margaret, along with a handful of other local producers, were fashioning wines that served to re-establish the Yarra Valley’s lofty reputation as a wine region.

From its first vintage, Seville Estate quickly established itself as one of the Yarra Valley’s finest producers. The Seville Estate style focuses on elegance and finesse, while showing fantastic complexity and structure. They are cool climate classics that stay true to the vineyard and vintage influences.

Graham and Margaret Van Der Meulen purchased the property in 2005, but the family tradition still remains for the McMahons. Peter and Margaret’s grandson, Dylan McMahon, is now the winemaker, following the passion ignited a generation before.

The Van Der Meulen’s plan was to carry on Seville Estate’s long-established record of producing consistently high quality wines.

There are three labels in the Seville Estate range; The Barber, the Estate range and the Reserve range. The Reserve range’s Old Vine shiraz and cabernet sauvignon draw exclusively from the small planting of the original 40-year-old vines.

While the original winery is still in use, 2011 saw the establishment of a larger winery and new cellar door, restaurant and function space. Amid the rolling hills and green pastures, the new additions capture some of the best views in the Yarra Valley. The restaurant sources local produce to create their delicious menu of modern Australian cuisine. The function space, Aspect Seville Estate, offers a unique architectural space that frames the estate’s picturesque views.

Tasting Notes

2010 Seville Estate Chardonnay

Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented with native wild yeast and matured in barrels on lees for this chardonnay. It has a refined focused style with complexity, great texture and natural acidity. Presenting tight melon and grapefruit aromas, it is medium-bodied with citrus fruit and matchstick flint lees complexity. Best White at Yarra Valley Wine Show 2011.

2010 Seville Estate Pinot Noir

On the nose, this wine presents aromas of cherry, spice and lees complexity. The palate is textured and complex with soft drying tannins that add structure and length to the finish. It shows red and dark cherry fruits, with a combination of spices. A very elegant and refined pinot noir from a very good vintage.

2010 Seville Estate Shiraz

This barrel-matured wine shows soft red berries and savoury overtones of pepper and spice. The well-integrated oak adds some subtle toasty characters to this shiraz. It presents tannins that are rounded, subtle and elegant. A recipient of gold medals at both the 2011 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and 2011 National Wine Show.

2010 Seville Estate The Barber Cabernet Merlot

The Barber range enables Seville Estate to adopt 35 years of winemaking knowledge and experience into different styles and varieties, complementing the Estate wines. The nose of this cabernet merlot shows briary red berries and cedar cigar box notes. The palate shows dark red fruits, chocolate and firm but balanced tannins.
