Stefani Estate

Stefano Stefani comes from the rolling hills of Tuscany, where his grandfather owned a vineyard and was an avid collector of fine wines. Stefano came to Australia in 1985 with the dream to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps in this new land.

Stefano and his wife Rina worked to make this dream a reality, purchasing their Yarra Valley property in 1997 and commencing planting the following year. Since then, the property has been closely monitored with some grafting and replanting to fine tune the layout of varieties within the site. The site currently has plantings of pinot gris, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and pinot noir.

Mario Marson is a great family friend of the Stefanis. He and Stefano share a close affiliation from a richly generous Italian culture, and Mario has been chief winemaker since the first vintage. A Heathcote property was bought in 2002 and planted mainly with shiraz. A second Yarra Valley property was purchased the following year to partner the original vineyard in the production of the same varieties. Ongoing planting will see the cabernet develop into a more diverse bordelaise style blend.

In 2007, varietal cuttings from the original Stefani Estate vineyard in Tuscany were released after three years in Australian quarantine. These were grafted onto established root-stock in various positions in the vineyard to gauge the best growing conditions.

Varietals include clones of sangiovese, mammolo bianco, malvasia, aleatico, trebbiano, toscano and crepolino bianco. The development of all properties is an ongoing
exercise with the aim to capture the very best expression of the site and variety.

The Stefani Estate winery and vineyard are situated approximately 600 metres above sea level, the highest vineyard site in the area. This favourable altitude allows for ideal cool climate growing conditions for their vines. Fruit ripens slowly, enhancing distinct characteristics in the wine.

The site has stunning views sweeping over the Yarra Valley to Melbourne city. Stefani Estate specialises in cool climate wines, especially pinots and chardonnay.
