Dominique Portet

Not only has the Portet family been making wine for ten generations, but their beginnings were at Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux, which provided them with a wine philosophy lesson like no other. Now, affable Frenchman Dominique Portet, a household name in Victorian wine circles, and son Ben, are continuing the tradition at this charming winery in the heart of the Yarra Valley.

It all started when Dominique would pedal his bike through the vineyards of the Medoc, and his father Andre would shoo his young son out of the chateau cellar, encouraging an adventurous life beyond those gravely banks. Making his way to California’s Napa Valley (graduating Dux of Oenology, Montpellier University), Dominique began to craft wines with his brother Bernard. However, much like the environment he was soon to encounter, Dominique hopped a little further, searching for vineyards to rival France.

The soil, the sun, the landscape, the people, the freedom, the culture – in Australia Dominique found his dream. The young Frenchman was hooked on his new discovery, and decades of pioneering fine wine has followed. Australia is home, now in his blood and that of his sons.

Today, with tenth generation winemaker Ben Portet guiding the family craft in the winery, he is maintaining its place deeply seated in Australian soil but with respect for the combined experiences of his forbears.

Dominique Portet specialises in sparkling wine, rosé, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, and produces roughly six wines each year. They recently won a gold medal at the 2010 Melbourne Concours des Vins for the 2010 Dominique Portet Sauvignon Blanc.

The cellar door has a French country feel, and the terrace café serves light foods from the winemaker’s table. They also sell La Boutique French-style products. Wine quality is exemplary across the board, and the serene surrounding landscape is the Yarra Valley at its best.

Tasting Notes

NV Dominique Portet Sparkling Brut Rosé

A blend of pinot noir and chardonnay grapes, grown exclusively in the cool eastern part of the Yarra Valley. The Dominique Portet Sparkling Brut Rosé draws on centuries of French tradition, bottle fermented and disgorged shortly before release, receiving only a small amount of red wine and a light addition of liqueur. Great with Tasmanian salmon, duck blinis and scallops.

2006 Dominique Portet André Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

André is a beautiful Australian blend of cabernet sauvignon grapes from the Yarra Valley and shiraz grapes from Heathcote. Filled with vitality, it’s a deep black-purple colour and its balanced elegance makes it worthy of tribute to the revered legend André Portet.

2010 Dominique Portet Sauvignon Blanc

The flavours are clear and crisp with aromas of lime blossom, white peaches and spring flowers. A lovely creamy texture, especially on the mid-palate. As the sauvignon grapes are from the Yarra Valley and the Pyrenees regions, these different locations add complexity, length and flavour to the wine.

2006 Dominique Portet Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Ripe, luscious cassis and blackcurrant fruits are the driving force, pulling oak and tannins behind with a velvety smooth delicious taste. Almost refreshing, with a vibrant and supple texture, layers of chocolate, mocha and truffle all evolve gracefully with just the right mix of ripe fruit. Its dense dark ruby colour is a delight in the glass.
